Author Sigmund Brouwer Visit Sigmund Brouwer Visit
In the afternoon on Tuesday, October 18th, our Grade 5-8 students will be visited by Canadian author Sigmund Brouwer.

Sigmund is one of the authors of "Seven the Series". This series is unique as it consists of seven books from seven different authors. They are written so that one can read them in any order. The authors include Eric Walters, Sigmund Brouwer, Shane Peacock, Norah McClintock, John Wilson, Richard Scrimger and Ted Staunton.

This series was so popular last year that these seven authors have written seven prequels! These prequels follow the adventures of the same characters that were in the first two series.

In the evening of October 18th, six of the seven authors will be presenting at Ardagh Bluffs Public School. The presentation will begin at 7:00 p.m. and end around 8:30 p.m.

This evening event is free- there is no charge for students to attend.

For more information about the books and the tour, please click on the following link:

The books from all the series (Seven, Sequels, Prequels) will be on sale at this evening event and some of the books will be avaialble durinnng the afternoon. Prices for each of the individual books are $10 and the sets are $60; no tax. French Program Review Program Review
Following are the contents of a letter being distributed to all families at Hillcrest and Portage View public schools regarding an upcoming French Program Review.

The Simcoe County District School Board (SCDSB) introduced the French Immersion (FI) program, beginning with Grade 1, in September 2013. The FI program is one component of the SCDSB's French as a Second Language (FSL) program. At that time, the board identified which schools would offer the program to ensure fair access to students from across Simcoe County. In order to maintain this fair access, the program must be reviewed on a regular basis to help balance enrolment and to minimize impacts on home school student populations.

A Program Review (PR) has been approved by the SCDSB Board of Trustees for our school. A proposed option is splitting the FSL program, with some grades attending Hillcrest Public School and the others attending Portage View Public School. All students in the English program would continue to attend their home school.

This review is being conducted to ensure balanced enrolment at our schools. The results of the review would take effect in September 2017.

We are hosting an information session to address parent questions and get feedback on the proposed changes.

Date: October 13, 2016
Time: 7 p.m.
Location: Portage View Public School

Further information is included in the SCDSB's 2015-16 Capital Plan. You can view it online at under 'Board' and 'Capital Planning'. Click on the Capital Plan 2015-16 link.

I invite you to contact me at 705-734-6363 x11397 with any questions or comments you have.

Sincerely,

Stuart Finlayson
Superintendent of Education
